ZP-121

Zinc dialkyldithiophosphate — mixed primary/secondary C3/C4/C8

Deliberately mixed alkyl distribution to get both the fast filming of a secondary and the thermal ceiling of a primary in one component. The pragmatic choice for a blender who wants one ZDDP in the tank farm instead of three.

Grades a formulator would benchmark ZP-121 against. Naming them is not a claim of equivalence — it is where to start the comparison.

The chemistry

Zinc Dialkyldithiophosphates

Antiwear, antioxidant and corrosion inhibitor in one molecule

Typical treat rate0.5 – 1.5 %

Still the most cost-effective antiwear chemistry ever commercialised. Primary alkyl ZDDPs are thermally more stable and preferred in industrial and heavy-duty applications; secondary alkyls decompose at lower temperature and film faster, which is why they dominate passenger-car engine oils. Alcohol chain length sets both the thermal stability and the hydrolytic stability.
