Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT)

The most widely specified hindered phenol in existence. Fully characterised, food-contact-approved in many jurisdictions, and used far beyond lubricants — fuels, plastics, rubber and transformer oils all consume it.

Phenolic Antioxidants

Primary low-to-mid temperature radical scavenger

Typical treat rate0.1 – 1.0 %

Hindered phenols built on the 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol motif. They donate a hydrogen atom to peroxy radicals and are the more cost-effective half of a paired antioxidant system below ~120 °C. Liquid grades matter for cold-blend and low-viscosity fluids where a solid will not dissolve without heat.
