EP-456

Sulfurized isobutylene

The highest-volume EP additive in industrial gear oils worldwide. High active sulphur, high load-carrying capacity, and the reference chemistry against which every alternative sulphur carrier is benchmarked.

Grades a formulator would benchmark EP-456 against. Naming them is not a claim of equivalence — it is where to start the comparison.

Typical treat rate0.5 – 5.0 %

Active and inactive sulphur carriers that decompose at asperity contact temperatures and lay down an iron sulphide film. This is what stands between a gear tooth and scuffing failure. Sulphur activity level is the variable that decides yellow-metal compatibility.
