DT-400M

Overbased magnesium alkylbenzene sulfonate

Magnesium instead of calcium. The reason to pay the premium is low-speed pre-ignition behaviour in downsized turbocharged gasoline engines — an area where calcium is actively implicated and magnesium is not.

The chemistry

Overbased Detergents

Acid neutralisation and deposit control

Typical treat rate0.5 – 4.0 %

Overbased calcium and magnesium sulfonates carry a colloidal carbonate core that neutralises combustion acids, plus a surfactant shell that keeps piston surfaces clean. TBN is the working currency here. Magnesium is chosen over calcium where low-speed pre-ignition or ash-related deposit behaviour is the constraint.
